Call for Participation in the Second Annual European DDI Users Group Meeting

DDI - The Basis of Managing the Data Life Cycle

EDDI is designed to provide an annual European forum where DDI users from Europe can gather to showcase their work and their progress toward DDI adoption, as well as discuss any questions or challenges they may have about the standard.

 

EDDI10 includes 20 presentations on case studies, interplay of DDI with other standards, software implementations, reports of working groups, and discussion sessions. Peter Wittenburg, Technical Director of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, will deliver the plenary speech.

Please note that there is a maximum capacity of 70 persons.

  

Two additional events will take place:

 

1. Half-day course on DDI 3: Putting DDI to Work for You (Wendy Thomas, Minnesota Population Center), morning of December 8.

 

2. A 2.5-day meeting of developers working on DDI implementations will take place prior to EDDI10. Agenda topics will include interoperability, open source tools, promoting DDI tools, sharing experiences, and future collaboration.

  

EDDI 2010 is organized jointly by CentERdata - Institute for Data Collection and Research; DANS - Data Archiving and Networked Services; GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences; IZA - Institute for the Study of Labor; SURF - the collaborative organization for IT innovations in higher education in the Netherlands; and Library and IT Services of Tilburg University.

 

Last year, the successful first EDDI Meeting took place in Bonn

TIC to Meet in Minneapolis

The Technical Implementation Committee (TIC) of the DDI Alliance will meet September 20-24, 2010, in Minneapolis, MN, to work on the next iteration of the DDI 2 and 3 development lines.

EDDI 2010 is organized jointly by CentERdata – Institute for Data Collection and Research, DANS - Data Archiving and Networked Services, GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences, IZA - The Institute for the Study of Labor, SURF (the collaborative organization for IT innovations in higher education in the Netherlands), and Library and IT Services of Tilburg University. The meeting will bring together DDI users and professionals from all over Europe. Anyone interested in developing, applying, or using DDI is invited to attend and present.
 
We pleased to announce that Peter Wittenburg, Technical Director of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, will deliver the plenary speech to EDDI 2010, and that the DDI Alliance will be sponsoring a half-day DDI course on Wednesday, December 8, to be taught by Wendy Thomas, University of Minnesota, Minnesota Population Center.
 
We are seeking presentations, talks, papers, posters on all things DDI:
·         Case studies
·         Mature implementations
·         Early implementations
·         Interplay of DDI with other standards or technologies
·         Projects in early phases in which DDI is under consideration
·         Critiques of DDI
 
We strongly encourage papers in different areas to ensure that a broad balance of topics is covered to attract the greatest breadth of participants, and we encourage conference participants to propose papers and posters that would be of interest to themselves and other attendees.

Submission

If you are interested in presenting a paper, please use the online submission system at IZA. The deadline for submissions is September 12, 2010. Please keep your presentation to 20 minutes or shorter.

Dagstuhl Seminar to Focus on DDI and Longitudinal Data

On October 17-22, there will be an advanced topics seminar held at Schloss Dagstuhl in Wadern, Germany, with a focus on longitudinal data.

This symposium-style workshop will bring together representatives from major longitudinal data collection efforts to share expertise and to explore the use of the DDI metadata standard as a means of managing and structuring longitudinal study documentation. Participants will work collaboratively to create best practices for documenting longitudinal data in its various forms, including panel data and repeated cross-sections.

DDI Alliance Welcomes New Members

The DDI Alliance is pleased to welcome three new members into the Alliance:

European DDI Users Meeting to Take Place in the Netherlands

The second annual European Users Group (EDDI) meeting will take place on December 8-9, 2010, in Utrecht in the Netherlands. The previous day, December 8, a half-day of DDI 3 training will be offered.

DDI Training Offered at Schloss Dagstuhl in Germany

A training workshop for DDI 3 will take place at the Leibniz Center for Informatics, Schoss Dagstuhl, in Wadern, Germany, on October 25-29, 2010. The title of the workshop is "The Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) XML Standard: Using DDI 3 to Support Preservation, Management, Access, and Dissemination Systems for Social Science Data."

The previous week, October 18-22, there will be a special Advanced Workshop focusing on using DDI to document longitudinal data.

DDI Expert Committee to Meet in Ithaca, NY

The DDI Expert Committee will meet in Ithaca, NY, USA, on Monday, May 31, just before the start of the annual meeting of the International Association for Social Science Information and Service Technology (IASSIST) conference.
