DDI Approaches to Variable Metadata to Inform New W3C Work

The W3C has officially rechartered the Dataset Exchange Working Group, with Franck Cotton serving as Chair of the new iteration.

The group's primary objective is to develop a W3C Recommendation for documenting datasets at the variable level, while also revising existing standards and vocabularies such as DCAT and Data Cube. See the new charter for more details.

This work will take as input approaches within DDI Cross-Domain Integration (DDI-CDI), while also drawing from DDI-Codebook and DDI-Lifecycle where appropriate.

The collaboration represents an important opportunity to align DDI-based variable metadata with widely adopted W3C standards used across open data and linked data communities.  Because standards such as DCAT are already referenced in national and international open data policies (including the US Open Government Data Act), this effort could significantly expand the visibility and adoption of granular variable-level metadata.

The resulting vocabulary is expected to improve interoperability, reuse, and FAIRness by enabling richer and more consistent machine-actionable descriptions of variables across data ecosystems.
