EDDI 2013 is organized jointly by Réseau Quetelet - French Data Archives for Social Sciences, GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences, and IDSC of IZA - International Data Service Center of the Institute for the Study of Labor.
The meeting will bring together DDI users and professionals from all over Europe and the world. Anyone interested in developing, applying, or using DDI is invited to attend and present.

Interplay of DDI with other standards or technologies
Projects in early phases in which DDI is under consideration

We strongly encourage papers in different areas to ensure that a broad balance of topics is covered which will attract the greatest breadth of participants, and we encourage conference participants to propose presentations, papers, and posters that would be of interest to themselves and other attendees.

NADDI 2013 Program Now Available

The program for the first annual North American Data Documentation Initiative (NADDI) Conference is now available at: http://www.ipsr.ku.edu/naddi/program.shtml
The NADDI Conference will take place on April 2 and 3 in Lawrence, Kansas and registration is now open. http://www.ipsr.ku.edu/naddi/registration.shtml. Please register by March 5, 2013. A reduced registration rate is available for a limited number of graduate students.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Jay Greenfield http://www.ipsr.ku.edu/naddi/JayGreenfield.shtml of Booz Allen Hamilton where he is the semantic architect for a DDI Lifecycle based metadata system that supports the National Children's Study (NCS).
DDI is an international data standard for the observation and measurement of human activity. Although primarily used by quantitative social scientists, an increasing number of scientists in other disciplines are embracing DDI to document and manage their data and metadata. The conference will be informative, interesting, and educational. There will be presentations on the use of DDI in research programs and data repositories, developments with DDI and demonstrations of new DDI tools. The NADDI Conference is an opportunity for those using DDI and those interested in learning more about it to come together and learn from each other. Patterned after the successful European DDI conference (EDDI), the conference will of interest to both researchers and data professionals in the social sciences and other disciplines.

DDI Qualitative Working Group Meeting Held in Bergen

Following the working group meeting in Gothenburg in December 2011, a small group has been formed to work on defining a robust model for describing qualitative data, from data collection to archiving to re-use, convened by Arofan Gregory and Louise Corti. At the Bergen meeting, held prior to EDDI12 meeting, progress was made to create a representative model, depicted by three class view diagrams (thanks to Larry Hoylel for his tireless work on this) plus detailed definitions of objects and their properties and relationships. The model and definitions will be available for external review in late January, so do watch this space.
DDI Moving to Model-Driven Specification

At its annual meeting in June 2012 the DDI Alliance approved the creation of a model-driven specification for DDI with bindings to expressions like XML and RDF. This next-generation specification will will make it easier to interact with other disciplines and other standards, to understand the specification, to develop and maintain it in a consistent and structured way, and to enable software development that is less dependent on specific DDI versions.
To begin work on the model, a workshop was held at Schloss Dastuhl in Wadern, Germany, in October 2012.

NADDI 2013 call for papers
The first annual North American Data Documentation Initiative User Conference (NADDI2013) will take place on April 2nd and 3rd, with an opening night reception on April 1st, at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. NADDI is based on the successful European DDI User Conference (EDDI), now in its fourth year.
We are looking for presentations related to DDI (http://www.ddialliance.org): the use of DDI in research settings, archives, or in official statistics organizations; papers on DDI tools, or critiques of DDI. Of particular interest are presentations on the use of DDI by research teams.
