DDI-Lifecycle v3.0
Published: 2008-04-28
DDI 3.0, published in April 28, 2008, represented a major advancement for DDI by fully incorporating XML Schemas and moving to a data life cycle approach. Element content for DDI 3.0 was developed by several Working Groups with the technical specification itself created by the Technical Implementation Committee (TIC). The intent of DDI Lifecycle was to support the management, preservation, and dissemination of complex social science data files. The ability to manage and reuse content improves the ability to capture metadata at its point of origin and then track its use and change over time. A later decision to continue developing the earlier simpler DDI structure resulted in naming the two development cycles. DDI 3.0 is consider the first published version of the DDI Lifecycle. Previous structures (up through DDI 2.1) was renamed as DDI Codebook.
As the first major structural revision of DDI no change logs were created. The intent of DDI version 3.0 was to support all of the content of DDI version 2.1 (later referred to as DDI-Codebook) and incorporate new coverage on data storage, data capture, and metadata management over time.
