First XML Schema based DDI product. At this point there was a single DDI product which was later split into DDI-Lifecycle and DDI-Codebook. The intent of this product was to provide a new schema structure for DDI. It covers the contents of version 2.1 with some organizational modifications and the addition of the following areas:

  • Data Collection - questionnaire flow 

  • Concept management

  • Grouping of studies

  • Publication of reusable metadata

  • Geographic structures and locations

  • Multiple data storage options

  • Agent managemet (organizations and individuals)

  • Archive content management

  • Record layout information

DDI 3.0, published in April 28, 2008, represented a major advancement for DDI by fully incorporating XML Schemas and moving to a data life cycle approach. Element content for DDI 3.0 was developed by several Working Groups with the technical specification itself created by the Technical Implementation Committee (TIC). The intent of DDI Lifecycle was to support the management, preservation, and dissemination of complex social science data files. The ability to manage and reuse content improves the ability to capture metadata at its point of origin and then track its use and change over time. A later decision to continue developing the earlier simpler DDI structure resulted in naming the two development cycles. DDI 3.0 is consider the first published version of the DDI Lifecycle. Previous structures (up through DDI 2.1) was renamed as DDI Codebook.
